While it is true that our skin ages as part of an organic and inevitable process, there are external factors, such as pollution, smoking and UV rays, that favor the appearance of free radicals responsible for the oxidative stress that accelerates the visible signs of aging: dark circles under the eyes, deep wrinkles, expression lines and blemishes.
Antioxidants play a key role in the defense against free radicals, because when they “attack” skin molecules they serve as a “shield”, preventing the damage they would otherwise cause. The main antioxidants are:
- Vitamins of groups A, C and E (present in most anti-wrinkle creams).
- Beta-carotene
- Zinc
- Selenium
And what is the best way for us to incorporate them? Through a diet rich in foods containing them. For example:
Beta-carotenes: oranges, carrots, mangoes, pumpkin, broccoli
Selenium: cereals, legumes, fish, wholemeal bread and dried fruits and nuts
Vitamin A: milk, liver, butter and eggs
Vitamin C: lemon, strawberries, oranges and kiwi fruit
Vitamin E: nuts and spinach
In this way we will not only achieve that our skin looks fresh for much longer but we will also contribute to make our organism feel much healthier.
